SEPTEMBER 2017

As we begin a new school year, I want to take the opportunity to welcome back our upperclassmen and parents.  I would also like to extend special greetings to those of you who are new to the School of Education and Training family.

When my son graduated from college, I asked him “Do you feel well educated?”  He exclaimed with alacrity “Yes”. I felt at that moment that I had done my job. There are many metaphors that apply to parenting but the one that seems most apt is the comparison of a parent to a trapeze artist.  Pulling the net too taunt means that your child when falling might bounce away forever, leaving it too slack, however, can do irreparable harm. The trick, then, is to measure between perpetual management and stepping in only when absolutely needed.  There is a world of difference between your child’s first day of kindergarten and their first day at the J.F.K. Educational Complex.  Yet on another level they’re much the same.  Each is a threshold along the road to adulthood and each is a step they must take on their own. As your child grows and encounters the friendship bumps, the worries about  the athletic competitions not won, and the college essays waiting to be completed, a parent, as do we the SET administration – must stand behind the child, acting as the support crew and not the driver.

The truth is we are in this together.  Our purpose is to foster your child’s ability to negotiate the world with knowledge, integrity, and compassion. Moreover, this ability comes from the long haul, not the short; from the collective whole, not any of the parts.

These wonderful beings that we call our children are as Barbara Kingsolver says “just a loan,” then our roles as rich as they may be are by design only temporary.  As we begin this year together, I hope that this greeting conveys the warmth and enthusiasm with which, I welcome you to our dynamic community- The School of Education and Training.

The SET uniform for 2017-2018 school year are blue and red polo shirts with the logo and khaki skirts or pants. You may purchase the blue or red polo shirts in the SET office.
